A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
