Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events result in an average of millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration last week because of the severe damage from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
